An Interview With Jason Thompkins of Harvest Rain




1) Hello Jason. Firstly I am honored to be conducting this interview with you. Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a little about your projects you are involved with?

Thank you. I am quite honoured to be here helping in any way I can. Most people know me as the guy behind the musical project HARVEST RAIN. I am the eldest son of your typical Southern South Carolinian family. My brother and I are currently the individuals behind HARVEST RAIN. Although most of my efforts go into my music I have also done various things through the years to help spread the gospel, so to speak. Besides music I did venture into publishing some of Julius Evola's racial writings that companies like Inner Traditions would never touch. Although these writings are what can be called racial in nature they are spiritual and not what I call zoological or biological racism. The "Astral Race", as Serrano would say, is what we have dealt with. In fact I do not even find them to be racist. They are simply books that deal with the issue of Race from a Spiritual and Higher point of view. Of course this was the 1930's in Fascist Italy. In today's world books like these ( "Three Aspects of the Jewish Problem", "Elements of a Racial Education", "Heathen Imperialism") and the very many magazine artcles we've put to English would get someone thrown in the Liberal spotlight ( See: http://thompkins_cariou.tripod.com ). In today's Politically Correct, multi-cultured and anti-Traditional world of Robots it is very hard not to be pointed at when venturing into these areas or even bringing the subject up so let me get back on track with the musical side of Harvest Rain here in a moment. I have also taken it upon myself to translate a good deal of Miguel Serrano's writings. Mostly from his Trilogy of Esoteric Hitlerism for my own Religious and Spiritual reasons as I am a follower of his teachings and worldview. This has been going on for almost 15 years. I learn as I go. So in this regard HARVEST RAIN is far more than a "musical band" to me. It is my "self imposed discipline", or as some would say, it is what I am giving back to the world to help the cause. As Serrano would say it is my "Son of Death" or "Son of the Spirit". Since I have no children of perishable flesh I have ventured the Left-Hand Tantric Path where the female Muse, the Soror Mystica or "Mystical Sister", impregnates the male and he gives birth to his Astral Son. That is how I see HARVEST RAIN.

Just like most people I started out with the Runes after my "Blood" started to awake to the Northern Mysteries. Back then it was very rare to find anything on Germanic or Nordic spirituality. Then came Ariosophy, the Volkisch 'back to the land' movement and it all ended up to Serrano in the end. Every single Occult Path lead me back to Miguel Serrano. And this was no mere coincidence and those who "know" his "Doctrine" know what I speak of. In my honest opinion he was the last great WARRIOR-TROUBADOUR of the generation of WWII. My music is inspired by my own spiritual growth and also the simple things of nature like a wind blowing through the fog, a butterfly soaring in the air and so forth. The gardens of childhood and dreams of the purest violet. HARVEST RAIN is almost a musical Diary of myself treading this Path.

2) Your music project Harvest Rain is very moving and inspirational. When did you begin your work as a musical artist? Who are your musical influences?

As I look back I have always been a musician. Even in Church Choirs. In Elementary School I did "Plays" in front of the whole school so I have always been into the arts one way or another. I took Violin lessons for 2 years during 5th and 6th Grade. I started singing for little 'punk' bands early on at the age of 15. We were all inspired by The Misfits and other Horror Rock bands. My Grandfather got me and my brother a classical guitar when we were 13. We taught ourself the guitar and everything else. Since a child I have always been drawn to the ghostly romantic side of Night and the romantic feeling of Autumn. I hear the music of HARVEST RAIN in the crisp Autumn wind of late October. Or the way a thundercloud gives off it's subtle aroma as the clouds gather and start speaking to themselves. The symbolism in nature is my main influence for HARVEST RAIN. Walking through the rows of corn at sunset when the wind is blowing hard on some overcast cloudy day. Watching fireflies and listening to the Cicadas at Summer's End as they get higher and higher in the trees and in their tone or pitch. That is the real music of Fall. The Swan-Song of the Cicadas buzzing at evening when the first cold front blows in.

My Musical influences are everything from Jim Morrison and the Doors, The Misfits and Glenn Danzig to Rozz Williams/Christian Death and Death In June/Current 93. My first taste of 'rebellion' was in the form of a black cassette tape that an older guy let me borrow. It was The Misfit's "Legacy of Brutality". So I was turned on to the dark punk or Horror punk genre before it had that label as the songs were distorted and hard yet there was this romantic side to songs like Hybrid Moments, She, Angelfuck and so forth. This dark romanticism continued when Glenn formed Samhain from the break-up of the Misfits with Archangel, The Shift, To Walk the Night and Human Pony Girl. It's important for me to mention that Christian Death's first LP "Only Theatre of Pain" and the next shorter EP "Deathwish" was very very very vital in forming my musical taste. Without doubt, Only Theatre of Pain will always be the most important album to me on the face of the earth. It basically was the soundtrack to my "young adult" (17-23) years.

As for the so-called Neofolk genre. I had never heard of that when I formed HARVEST RAIN. I do not really call my music Neofolk. It is sometimes dark folk and at times it is Cold Wave. It simply is what sounds pleasant to me.



3) Who and what are your lyrical inspirations?

I guess I mostly answered that above.

The reaping of the corn, the crisp Autumnal nights decked out in gloves and collars turned up as we roam the graves, the legends of the Old South, ghosts, the supernatural, the search for the Beloved, the Amada, Ella, as She calls from within the blood, rural folk ways, the absolute rejection of modern morale (or the lack of Morale in Modern society), the elder ways of yesteryears and etc. Of course HARVEST RAIN keep or have a certain 'aura' that surrounds it as we represent the lost or I like to say the occult (the hidden) side of the deep rural South where we still say "Yes Mam" and we still open the door for Ladies. We still keep a morale of a true Gentleman or Gentile-Man. Where the Archetype is still at work within the rural "Christian" communities. If you look good enough you still see old customs and you come to realize that it does not matter whether one calls their God Christ or Wuotan because this is where the mystery of the Archetype takes hold. Serrano shows this to us especially in "The Resurrection of the Hero" where he writes on what he terms "Esoteric Kristianism". However - it is shown and written about in all his Esoteric books, mainly the Trilogy.

4) What lies in the future regarding future musical works?

We are currently working on a new album called "CATHEDRAL WEATHER". I have some tracks that did not make it to the BLOOD HYMNS album that I am going to release as GENTILE PEASANTRY. I have been contacted by a Label so it may be soon.

5) Harvest Rain has a very metaphysical, dream-like atmosphere in the music. Do you develop some of your artistic creations from recollections of your dreams?

Yes. It's just music that comes naturally to us. We could care less about expensive equipment and so on. It is TRUE SOUL MUSIC. Astral music. Without question my music and Spiritual Path go hand in hand. Songs like "Strange Evening Glow". After I sat down and listened to that song upon finishing it I was so mystified that I had created that. But of course as a musician each new inspired song is the "best one yet!". Another song that I have had the most compliments on would be a tie between "Strange Lights Appear" and "Thuletide". I honestly do not know how this songs are made. But they do represent my soul, my dreams, my visions. You are right about that.



6) Who are your greatest influences philosophically and historically? What kind of effect did they have on you and your worldview?

Early in life it was living and playing in a real true rural country home and farm. All that is now gone. Even the Amish are loosing the battle against 'Modernity'. Then came my interest in ghosts and the Occult at a very young age. And I will not play games. I have experimented with plenty of mind-altering chemicals that took me to places I often wished I'd not seen. Jung, Hesse, Parapsychology, old legends and I was always sharp with my 'Intuition'. I could see that the "Wicca Movement" was highjacked by Feminism. My venture into "raw heathenism" was towards both the good and the bad or shall we say "Beyond Good and Evil". Abraxas. Not fluffy bunny spells to get girlfriends and etc. Then came the synchronistic year that literally lead me straight to Miguel Serrano. There has been no turning back.

7) Miguel Serrano is one of your greatest influences. Were you in contact with him? What are your thoughts on him?

I wrote to him and received some letters and some were written in copies of books given to me as gifts on the first few pages ("MANU" and "THE SON OF THE WIDOWER"). There are things that one wishes to keep private, but I will reveal this. I "asked the question". In my opinion the most important thing he wanted me to know and do was "find my ELLA, my "HER" (or, "Medea", as he put it since I am Jason, for those who know the legend)". In other words, find Thule-Hyperborea within my soul. Keep searching. With no quarter. Fight til the end. No stopping. No pity. Kali Yuga may come and strip me bear. Still stand proud and speak and represent those "Golden Shadows of the Black Sun". "Remember those who have fallen for our just cause." I feel there is a new uprising of the Esoteric SS, that is to say, the Schwarze Sonne or Black Sun. The Occult part of this conflict continues. It is hard at times to keep going, but the Dawn always comes just after the darkest part of Night. Lucibel shines in the East and "if you listen hard enough you will hear me (Serrano) like a faint Cathedral Bell". For those who have ears let them hear. My thoughts on him, my friend, would take a whole book. He is a main part of my life and destiny.



8) You have translated some of Miguel Serrano's works into English. Are you going to be assisting his estate in translating his works for the public? It is such a shame that more of his works are not available in English as I believe he is one of the last great philosophers and his voice needs to be heard.

There is a reason why his words will only be available to the "underground" or the number of the few. That tribe of Robots that work for the Demiurge, that blood-sucking Jehovah or El Shaddai, will see to it that the TRUTH not get out. They will buy the Copyrights and never have them published. Be forwarned. This is a serious war that has gone on for millions of years. I have indeed translated from his Doctrine for my own Religious reasons. Everything from a good amount of "The Golden Cord - Esoteric Hitlerism" and "MANU - For the Man to Come", "The Resurrection of the Hero" and the "Ritual of the Black Sun" which appears in MANU. I also put together a nice booklet entitled "THE PATH OF ESOTERIC HITLERISM" which contains nothing but the major quotes from the books. "The Last Avatar" was translated last year by someone. It was a very noble thing to do as Serrano's Grandson said that "No one owns the Copyrights to Miguel Serrano". That is absurd to think someone OWNS his words. It has nothing to do with his "Estate" - which I have heard all three will be put to English but my questions have gone unanswered so I am "intuitively" feeling shakey about that. This is a situation where we need only the QUALITY and not "Quantity". We need real beings who still feel that Hyperborean wind in their very blood. They feel that Ancient Sun coming back. Swirling through and against time and space. The Elect. As Serrano would say, man into Virya (Hero), Virya into Divya (God-Man). It's an ancient Alchemical Initiation of the Blood. Man back into the Overman or Superman.



9) You also ran a website with translations of Julius Evola's writings. Is the site still active and is there going to be any updates?

I once ran it but I got too involved with Serrano so I wanted to spend my time where my Path was leading me. But http://thompkins_cariou.tripod.com is by far the best place for English writings by Evola. And we did not care about "Political Correctness". No compromises. That is why it is called "EVOLA AS HE IS".

10) Your thoughts on the UFO phenomenon. Fact or fiction? Personally I believe fact. Mankind is ridiculous with their ego to believe that we are the only form of "intelligent" life in the galaxy.

The Disks of Light are the reincarnation of the Grail Archetype. I have a writing on this in a book I have begun. In the middle ages they searched and searched yet only the few saw. Today we search and search and only the few see the "New Grail" or GRAL since I believe it was an Emerald which fell from Lucifer's crown when the "Heavens" were at war. Parables within parables. The GRAL is the Search itself......

UFO's are very real.

11) Jason, I thank you for your time. Are there any parting comments or wisdom that you would like to share?

Thank you. I have enjoyed answering these questions. I hope I stayed on track. Sometimes I can ramble because there is so much to try to explain. Thank you for the interest in HARVEST RAIN.
